EPSO Abstract Reasoning Sample Questions with Explained Patterns

Abstract reasoning tests show a sequence of figures and ask which one comes next. They measure how quickly you can isolate the rules that change from one figure to the next — usually a combination of rotation, number of elements, shading and position.

Below are 12 worked examples from the practice bank of this site. For each sequence, try to name every rule before looking at the options, then open the explanation to check whether you spotted all of them.

  1. Question 1

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: B

Three shapes: types rotate through positions each step (tri→sq→diamond→hex cycle). Fill: majority of current fills determines next step's fills. Sizes fixed per position: 10, 14, 18.

  2. Question 2

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: A

Three shapes in each frame. Left shape rotates +30° per step. Middle shape copies the left shape rotation from the previous step (delayed by 1). Right shape copies the middle rotation from the previous step (delayed by 2). All shapes toggle fill independently each step. Types are fixed: left=square, middle=triangle, right=circle.

  3. Question 3

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: B

Four overlapping rules: (1) shape drifts diagonally +15 on x and +15 on y each step. (2) type cycles square→triangle→diamond→hexagon→star. (3) rotation accelerates by +15° more each step (15°,45°,90°,150° → +75°=225°). (4) size shrinks by 2 each step (20→12) and fill toggles each step (filled→empty→filled→empty→filled).

  4. Question 4

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: A

Six positions in a ring. Active star (filled) jumps +2 positions each step. Previous position becomes unfilled circle. Position before that disappears.

  5. Question 5

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: D

Shapes in a 3×1 grid. Each step: if a shape is filled, it moves right (wrapping). If empty, it stays but changes type to the next in cycle. All filled shapes rotate +45°.

  6. Question 6

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: B

A diagonal sweep pattern: shapes move along the diagonal from top-left to bottom-right. Each step the shape advances +20 on both x and y, the type cycles circle→square→triangle, and filled alternates. Additionally, a static cross marker remains at position (50,50) throughout.

  7. Question 7

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: D

    Three concentric shapes. Outer cycles: hexagon→circle→square→triangle. Middle = previous outer. Inner = 2 steps back. Fill rotates: step 1 (F,E,F), step 2 (E,F,E), step 3 (F,E,F), step 4 (E,F,E). Step 4: outer=triangle(empty), mid=square(filled), inner=circle(empty).

  8. Question 8

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: D

Left diamond oscillates size: big(20)/small(10) with period 2. Right hexagon fill cycles with period 3: T,T,F,T,T,F. Hexagon size is constant.

  9. Question 9

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: B

Three circles cycle through states: small-unfilled(8)→medium-filled(14)→large-unfilled(20). Each circle is offset by one state. Cycle repeats every 3 steps.

  10. Question 10

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: A

Each step adds a shape pair: left shape + right mirror (type+1, opposite fill). Accumulates. Step 4 adds diamond(empty) + hexagon(filled).

  11. Question 11

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: D

Top shape (star) rotates +60° each step. Middle shape cycles circle→square→triangle→diamond. Bottom hexagon toggles fill. Sizes are fixed per position.

  12. Question 12

Which figure comes next in the sequence?

    → ?
    A
    B
    C
    D
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: B

    A filled circle moves diagonally: top-left → center → bottom-right → top-right → center → bottom-left. All others remain unfilled.
